When I first walked into a Pilates class back in 2000, I had no idea that this form of exercise would profoundly transform my life. As a 50-year old woman, staying active and healthy was always a priority.  I’d heard of Pilates but, described as a gentle form of exercise suitable for older adults, I decided it wasn’t for me.

Ten years later, when retirement from corporate Fitness approached and I was due to return to the UK after 35 years working overseas, I thought that it would be a good idea, from a business perspective, to get qualified as a Pilates Teacher.  So whilst in Dubai, I enrolled in a 2-week intensive Stott Pilates course.

At the time, my fitness level was up in the elite category and I didn’t think that I could feel any fitter, healthier, leaner or happier.

However….

After those 2 intensive weeks of practising Pilates day in day out,  I couldn’t believe how even more amazing I felt.  Initially it was very subtle, but as the months went by, I noticed how my performance improved in every activity I took part in – and even in the little things of every day life.   Not only had I added another class to my business but I’d discovered a new and better me.

Improved Shoulder Mobility

One of the most noticeable changes since starting Pilates has been the improvement in my shoulder mobility. I love swimming; it’s a passion of mine and an excellent way to stay fit. However, like all sports, it creates imbalances in the body and, for me, years of swimming without proper stretching started to restrict my shoulder mobility.  Pilates exercises, focusing on controlled movements and stretching, have significantly enhanced my shoulder mobility and now, I glide through the water with ease and efficiency, enjoying my swim sessions more than ever before.

Standing Tall with Confidence

Before Pilates, I often found myself slouching without even realizing it. This poor posture led to discomfort and a lack of confidence in my stance. Through consistent Pilates practice, I’ve learned to engage my core and align my spine correctly. The emphasis on posture in Pilates has translated into my everyday life, making it more natural and effortless for me to stand up tall. This improvement hasn’t just been physical; it has boosted my confidence and presence in social settings.

Automatic Core Engagement

One of the main focuses of Pilates is the core. Strengthening the abdominal muscles is central to the practice, and this has been a revelation for me. Initially, I had to consciously engage my core during exercises, but over time, it has become second nature. My core muscles now switch on automatically when needed, providing better support for my back and improving my overall stability. This automatic engagement has made everyday tasks easier and has significantly reduced the risk of injury.  In fact, since qualifying as a Pilates Instructor, getting to know my physiology in depth, learning how to stretch properly and realising the importance of stretching after my activities, I have never pulled a muscle since.

Enhanced Flexibility

Pilates has also greatly enhanced my flexibility and balance. The range of motion in my joints has increased, and I feel more agile in my movements. This newfound flexibility has made activities like climbing over styles on my weekend hikes, getting on and off my Ducati 700cc motorbike and getting in and out of my small Hilleberg Tent possible as I cruise into my 70’s.

I’ve Found My Purpose

For the past 14 years I’ve been teaching Pilates full-time.  I love passing on the many different benefits to my clients – most of whom are over 60 – and hearing how my teaching has greatly improved the quality of their lives.  They are more agile and have less stiffness, aches and pains when doing activities like gardening, playing with the grandkids and other activities they now enjoy better as a result of adding Pilates to their lives.  Not to mention overcoming the the fear of falling.

Why You should you do Pilates

Pilates is often called an ‘as well as’ activity meaning that, on its own, it’s not enough to meet the Government guidelines of optimal fitness.  However,  I do recommend it for everyone – no matter what age or ability – especially as a foundation for people who want to take up Strength Training.
